Head coach Massey strongly supports the Canadian men's national team: "We play tough, but we're never dirty."

In a friendly match in Toronto on Saturday, the Canadian men's national football team, one of the hosts of the 2026 World Cup, held Iceland to a 2-2 draw after trailing by two goals.

However, more attention-grabbing than the score was the fact that the Canadian team received another red card late in the game. Facing external criticism of the team's discipline, Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch firmly defended his defense and players in a post-match interview.

In the 80th minute, Taijong Buchanan was shown a straight red card for elbowing an opposing player in the head. This marked the third consecutive match in which a Canadian player had been sent off, and the fourth red card in their last eight games.

In response, Massi said strongly after the match: "We are indeed very physical and play very hard, but we are by no means a dirty team. I am not worried that the team will get a bad reputation because of this, but in future tournaments, such a red card will undoubtedly change the course of the game instantly."

Putting aside the controversy surrounding the red card, Massi highly praised the team's tactical execution in adversity. Trailing 0-2 at halftime, Massi gave the team a much-needed boost in the locker room.

Mashi revealed his strategy to reporters: "I told everyone to stay calm. We still controlled the game, and as long as we increased the pace, the first and second goals would come sooner or later, and we could even win."

Jonathan David's two penalty goals in the second half perfectly validated Mash's tactical plan. He said, "The only thing that disrupted our counter-attack rhythm was that red card."

With only about 75 days left until the start of the USA-Canadian-Mexican World Cup, the Canadian team's preparations have entered the final sprint. Speaking about the upcoming squad evaluations and match drills, Mashi frankly stated that he has conveyed clear expectations to the players, hoping they can translate what has been emphasized in training into concrete actions on the field.
