According to ClutchPoints' NBA insider Brett Siegel on Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks have shown strong interest in San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney. They also planned to contact Duke University head coach Jon Sheyer, but he has made it clear he will remain in his current position.
The 41-year-old Sweeney initially worked as a video analyst for the New Jersey Nets before becoming an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, and San Antonio. He has served under head coaches such as Avery Johnson, PJ Carlesimo, Dwane Casey, and Jason Kidd, and has been assisting Mitch Johnson since 2025.
If the Mavericks want Sweeney to take the helm, they will inevitably face fierce competition from several teams. The Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers have both previously expressed strong interest in Sweeney and have included him in their respective considerations.
Meanwhile, another top candidate has emerged on the Mavericks' head coaching shortlist. According to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein, Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant coach Mika Nori is a key candidate the Mavericks are considering, besides Sweeney. The 50-year-old previously served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets, and Detroit Pistons, where he developed a close working relationship with then-Raptors general manager and current Mavericks president Masai Ujiri.
According to Siegel, the Mavericks' management expects to interview several candidates in the coming weeks. Their goal is to finalize a new head coach before the NBA draft and build a roster around 2025's number one draft pick, Cooper Flagg.
