The Athletic's investigative journalist Simon Hughes, exclusively reported on Wednesday that Egypt international winger Mohamed Salah may be willing to stay at Liverpool, but only if head coach Arne Slot, his coaching staff, and those in the hierarchy who support the latter are sacked.
According to Hughes's inside information, Salah confided to close friends and several team correspondents he was close with several months ago that he might consider staying if Slot, his coaching staff, and those in the hierarchy who support the latter were sacked.
At the time, he expressed to these individuals his disgust with the Dutch head coach and those who support the latter, feeling that his contributions to the club had been forgotten, that promises had been broken, and that they were the main culprits for the team's poor performance this season.
While Salah did not name any specific executive he was particularly unhappy with, Hughes stated that it is widely believed to be sporting director Richard Hughes.
Hughes added that the latter was indeed one of the biggest contributors who successfully persuaded Salah to extend his contract two years two years ago. The Egyptian star later led the team and helped Arne Slot win the club's second Premier League title in the 2024/25 season with outstanding individual performances.
However, this summer, Liverpool, Slot, and Hughes chose to completely abandon legendary manager Jürgen Klopp's signature "heavy metal attacking football" tactical system, leaving the team completely unable to adapt to this sudden tactical change. The resulting collective slump in performance, along with his teammates, was unacceptable to Salah.
Even more so, according to reports, legendary captain Steven Gerrard is seemingly the only person who truly knew Salah's emotions.
Meanwhile, Salah's recent public criticism of Slot on his personal social media account, followed by the deliberate posting of photos of him dining with teammates Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Milos Kerkez who supported him, has been interpreted as a means of declaring his stance to the club.
However, Hughes also raised reasonable questions about Mohamed Salah's position. He stated that a careful review of his past statements reveals that the player expressed similar views during Klopp's tenure.
Previously, after being substituted in a match against West Ham United, he told reporters after the game, "If he had expressed how he felt about being substituted, something as big as a fire would have happened."
Furthermore, his past conflicts with former teammate Sadio Mané over fierce competition, his constant pressure on club management through the media to secure a contract extension, and his complaint to reporters last year during a match against Leeds United that he was being made a scapegoat for the team's poor performance all suggest that Salah's personality may be somewhat arrogant.
Moreover, the club's greatest number 11 has already publicly stated his intention to leave. To cave in to his demands and have him opted to stay now, would be extremely awkward for both Salah and the Premier League giants, and could even lead to a public relations disaster.
