ESPN's Shams Charania exclusively revealed on Wednesday's Pat McAfee Show that several NBA teams are considering acquiring Dallas Mavericks veteran Kyrie Irving.
According to Shams, many of these teams are not just ordinary teams, but rather the Mavericks' own rivals. They are all closely monitoring Irving and his situation with the team, and are eager to acquire the player.
Shams revealed that the sudden surge in attention surrounding Irving stems from changes in the Mavericks' internal power structure, which is believed to be closely related to former majority owner Mark Cuban.
Many key members from Cuban's ownership have had their ties severed by owner Patrick Dumont, and Irving is now the only remaining key figure from the Cuban era.
This includes Luka Dončić, whose trade to the Los Angeles Lakers last year caused a huge stir.
General Manager Nico Harrison, who orchestrated this sensational mid-season trade, was fired last November.
Adding to the speculation, head coach Jason Kidd's dismissal this week has been interpreted as a move by Dumont Mavericks to sever ties with the key figures of the previous administration.
However, President Masai Ujiri's public remarks at his latest press conference have been puzzling.
At the press conference, he said that Irving is a "generational talent," and therefore he wants to see the veteran team up with Cooper Flagg to carry the Mavericks' future. This statement makes it seem less like the Mavericks are trying to distance themselves from Irving.
Regardless, driven by all these sensitive issues, Irving's situation has indeed attracted significant attention across the NBA, and Shams believes that the player's situation will become increasingly apparent in the team's trajectory for the remainder of the year.
The 34-year-old Kyrie Irving suffered a torn ACL in his left knee at the end of last season and did not play a single minute for the Mavericks in the 2025/26 season.
Previously, there were hopes that the former Cleveland Cavaliers legend could return in the second half of the 2025/26 season, but those hopes were dashed when the Dallas Mavericks and Irving's agent announced in February that he would miss the rest of the season.
