The University of Kentucky has released an official statement confirming that Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and NBA veteran Adrian "Odie" Smith passed away on April 28 at the age of 89.
Smith's basketball career is legendary. He was born in a farmhouse in rural Kentucky without electricity or running water, and his initial practice tools for shooting were just peach baskets nailed to trees.
With his exceptional talent and perseverance, Smith not only stood out at Northeast Mississippi Junior College, but also joined the University of Kentucky, becoming a member of the famous "Violin Five" and leading the team to the NCAA National Championship in 1958.
Smith was equally outstanding on the international stage. In 1960, he represented the U.S. men's basketball team at the Rome Olympics and won a gold medal. In 2010, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame along with this legendary 1960 Olympic team.
Smith's career was equally impressive. He joined the Cincinnati Royals (now the Sacramento Kings) in 1961, playing alongside Robertson. As a guard who was only 1.85 meters tall, he had the highlight of his career in 1966, winning the NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Later in his 10-year NBA career, he also played for the Golden State Warriors and was Julius Erving's teammate in the ABA season.
Smith's passing is not only a great loss to the history of Kentucky basketball, but also symbolizes the fall of another star of America's golden generation of basketball. What he left behind for posterity is not only those weighty trophies, but also the spirit of struggle that led him from the rural peach basket to the pinnacle of the Hall of Fame.
