The Mavericks have officially appointed Schmitz to build a new basketball operations system.

May 10 - According to ESPN, the Dallas Mavericks have officially appointed former Portland Trail Blazers assistant general manager Mike Schmitz to oversee day-to-day basketball operations under president Masai Ujiri.

Schmitz will be fully involved in the team's development, including scouting assessments, player personnel, strategic planning, and cross-departmental collaboration . This is one of the first major management changes made since Ujiri officially took office.

 

In addition, Schmitz previously joined the Trail Blazers' management in 2022 and served as an ESPN draft analyst from 2017 to 2022 , where he was known for his excellent draft evaluation skills.

 

“Joining the Dallas Mavericks is an incredible opportunity,” Smits said in a statement. “I have immense respect for Masai, the team’s management, and their vision for the future. I’m excited to work alongside the great team I have to build a championship-caliber team.”
