After Chelsea's 1-3 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, interim manager Calum McFarlane expressed strong dissatisfaction in a post-match interview.
McFarlane bluntly stated that the team's poor performance at the beginning of the game was the fatal flaw that led to the defeat, and said that the level of play in the first 15 minutes was unacceptable.
Chelsea collapsed from the start. Just 120 seconds into the game, their defense missed a chance to allow Taiwo Awoniyi to head home. Shortly after, Maro Gusto conceded a penalty, putting Chelsea down two goals in a short period.
Despite Enzo hitting the post, Palmer's penalty being saved, and João Pedro scoring a spectacular bicycle kick in stoppage time, none of this could mask the disastrous consequences of a poor start.
In a post-match interview, McFarlane criticized the team, saying, "The level of play in the first 15 minutes was far below expectations. The way those two goals were conceded put us in a difficult position. At the top level of professional football, you absolutely cannot give a team that is fighting desperately to avoid relegation such an opportunity."
Regarding the first goal conceded, McFarlane specifically pointed out the defensive blunder: "We made a serious mistake by leaving three players in front of one at the far post, even though we knew before the match that the opponent was good at crossing to the far post and that their number 9 player had a habit of drifting wide. We defended very well against Leeds United at Wembley before, but today's performance was disappointing."
Finally, McFarlane emphasized that while the team created some chances in the second half, they couldn't rely on luck to save the day when the start was so poor. He stated that the team must immediately address and improve this lack of focus at the start of the game, or they will not be able to survive in top-level competition.
