The Memphis Grizzlies released a statement on Tuesday confirming the tragic passing of forward Brandon Clarke, who was only 29 years old.
The team said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Brandon Clark. Brandon was not only an outstanding teammate, but also a wonderful person. His impact on the team and the entire Memphis community will be remembered for a long time. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver later issued a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke. One of the longest-serving players for the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who always brought passion and energy to the court. Our thoughts and condolences are with Brandon's family, friends, and the entire Grizzlies community."
Brandon Clark was born on September 19, 1996, in Vancouver, Canada, and moved with his family to Phoenix, Arizona, USA, at a young age. As the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2019 NBA draft, he spent seven years in the Memphis professional league.
To date, Clarke has played 309 regular season games for the Grizzlies, averaging 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 20.8 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 60.5%, a three-point percentage of 26.6%, and a free throw percentage of 69.6%. He also played 14 playoff games for the Grizzlies, averaging 10.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 21.8 minutes per game.
However, Clark has been plagued by injuries for the past three years. He first suffered a torn Achilles tendon in March 2023, ending his season prematurely, and then missed the 2024/25 season due to a severe sprain of the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
In September 2025, Clark was ruled out for the rest of the season again due to a Grade 2 right calf strain. This April, he was arrested in Cross County, Arkansas, on suspicion of possession of controlled substances and speeding.
As of now, the official cause of Clark's death has not been released. According to the American gossip media outlet TMZ, Clark's passing is suspected to be related to drug abuse.
