Germany, nicknamed the "German Machine," rallied from behind to defeat Switzerland 4-3 in a friendly match, thanks to goals from Jonatan Tah, Gnabry, and Wirtz. Nagelsmann stated that the players must learn to face criticism and believe that Wirtz will become even stronger.
The 22-year-old Wirtz joined Premier League giants Liverpool last June, but faced much criticism due to his initial lackluster performance. However, after a period of adjustment, Wirtz contributed 4 goals and 2 assists for Sloth's team in the Premier League, and 1 goal and 3 assists in the Champions League, responding to the doubters with his performances.
Germany's head coach Julian Nagelsmann said of Wirtz, "This is a normal situation, something any young player goes through. He's an emotional person, and first he needs to learn to handle criticism. But the level of criticism he received was clearly unreasonable."
“Our relationship became closer, we had many good conversations, and he opened up. He is intelligent and very honest, and you get a lot of feedback from talking to him. He can learn a lot from that experience and become stronger than ever.”
In addition, Nagelsmann said, "What sets Wirtz apart is his level of commitment, and as a left-sided attacking midfielder, his coverage and effort are outstanding."
"He is already a well-known player in world football. If he continues to perform like this, he can stay at the top level for a long time no matter which club he plays for, because his ability is incredible and he is always full of energy."
On the other hand, Germany will host Ghana in their next friendly match, continuing their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
