Union Berlin announced on Thursday the official appointment of 50-year-old Mauro Lustellinelli as the first-team coach. He will take over from Marie-Louise Etta and will take office on July 1.
Before taking over as manager of Union Berlin, Lustrinelli led Thun to their first-ever Swedish Allsvenskan title as a newly promoted team. Since taking charge of Thun in July 2022, he has accumulated a record of 85 wins, 33 draws, and 39 losses in all competitions.
Union Berlin has paid approximately €1 million in compensation to Thun in order to acquire the young Swiss coach. Lusterlinelli has signed a contract with Union Berlin until June 30, 2028, the same length as his original contract with Thun.
Regarding the appointment, Union Berlin's football director, Horst Helter, explained: "Mauro has demonstrated his ability to build and develop teams in recent years. Leading a newly promoted team to the league title reflects both his coaching ability and his capacity to lead and motivate the team."
"Furthermore, his coaching style aligns perfectly with our philosophy. We want to play more proactively, utilize more young players, and achieve success. We are confident that we have found the right head coach and look forward to working with him."
Lustellini himself said: "I am very much looking forward to taking on new challenges at Union Berlin. Union Berlin is a special club with clear values and a group of sincere people."
“I am full of motivation and can’t wait to embark on a new journey with the board, all staff, fans and the team. With unity, passion, hard work and courage, we are sure to achieve great things together.”
