Former Burnley captain, Engllish defender Ben Mee has announced his retirement on Wednesday via his personal social media accounts, ending his 16-year professional football career.
In his retirement statement, Mee expressed his regret at not being able to continue his career next season, stating that it was time to say goodbye to the pitch and move on to the next stage of his life. He also expressed his gratitude to his last club, Sheffield United, and their fans.
He deeply apologized for not being able to help the club achieve their dream of promotion back to the Premier League, but said he would remember and forever cherish the support, encouragement, and guidance he received over the years.
Mee wrote: “Thank you Sheffield United. It wasn’t the season we all hoped for, but I was honored to play for this great club, to play in front of such passionate fans, and to meet all the wonderful people who make the club run – the players and staff.”
“As I begin this new chapter in my life, I will cherish every moment of this time. Of course, I really hoped to contribute more to the team in the second half of the season, but unfortunately, that’s not the opportunity. That’s football. I wish everyone at the club all the best for next season and beyond.”
