The Philadelphia 76ers released a statement Tuesday confirming their departure from President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey. The news was first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania and subsequently confirmed by the official sources.
As for head coach Nick Nurse, Charranjen believes he will remain in his position.
Since becoming president of basketball operations in November 2020, the 53-year-old Morey has led the 76ers for six seasons. During this time, the 76ers achieved a regular season record of 270 wins and 212 losses and made the playoffs five times.
During his tenure, Morey also spearheaded several blockbuster trades, including the acquisition of star players such as James Harden and Paul George. He also made significant contributions to the draft, successfully acquiring highly promising young talents like V.J. Echcomb and Jared McCain for the 76ers.
With the 76ers swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals, Daryl Morey's six-year career in Philadelphia has officially come to an end. Josh Harris, one of the 76ers' owners, stated in a press release: "I have immense respect for Daryl Morey both personally and professionally, and I appreciate his contributions over the past six seasons. After discussions with Daryl, we believe it's time to start afresh. Bob Myers will be responsible for selecting our new head coach, and I believe his experience building four NBA championship teams will be a valuable asset."
"The fans' frustration and disappointment are completely understandable and justified. We have fallen far short of our own expectations and failed to deliver the results the city deserves. I am deeply troubled by this, but I believe Bob can pave the way forward for the team."
Former Warriors general manager and current HBSE Sports president Bob Myers said, "I understand the importance of the 76ers to the city of Philadelphia, so finding the right leader to shape the team's future is crucial. The head coaching search will begin immediately, and we will evaluate candidates with a rigorous and careful approach. I believe the 76ers are the ideal home for the league's top talent and look forward to further strengthening our operational structure in the future."
As of now, Morey's successor has not yet been determined. The 76ers are evaluating several potential candidates, including team general manager Elton Brand, Warriors assistant general manager Larry Harris, Thunder vice president of basketball operations Jesse Gould, Celtics vice president of basketball operations Mike Zaren, and even Bob Myers, who is in charge of recruitment.
