Sky Sports' renowned Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, reported on Monday that Brighton and their German head coach, Fabian Hürzeler, are close to finalizing a contract extension.
According to the report, Hürzeler has agreed to a new three-year contract extension with Brighton, which runs until the summer of 2029. Currently, lawyers for both sides are conducting a final review of the new contract, and after the review process is completed, Hürzeler will finalize the extension with the club before the end of the season.
This extension will dispel all rumorus claiming that Hürzeler is close to being appointed as the new Bayer Leverkusen head coach this summer.
When Brighton suffered a poor run of form, where they managed only one win in 13 games earlier this season, Hürzeler has faced criticism from fans. However, the German coach, who is still under 35, is clearly considered by the Seagulls' management to be the best candidate to entrust the club's future to.
About Fabian Hürzeler
The 33-year-old Fabian Hürzeler was born on February 26, 1993, in Houston, Texas, USA. He is 1.83 meters tall and is a former Germany U19s international defensive midfielder during his playing career. He holds American, German, and Swiss citizenship.
Hürzeler joined Bayern Munich's youth academy at the age of 10 and began playing for their reserve team in 2011, but was not promoted to the first team.
After leaving Bayern in 2013, Hürzeler played for Hoffenheim and 1860 Munich, but at the age of 22, realizing his dream of becoming a professional footballer was fading, he chose to pursue a coaching career.
From 2016 to 2020, Hürzeler served as the head coach of Pipinsried, a Bavarian non-league club. During this time, he helped the club avoid relegation.
In the summer of 2020, Hürzeler was appointed assistant coach of St. Pauli, and in December 2022, he became it interim head coach. Shortly after, he was promoted to the permanent head coach position, becoming the youngest head coach in St. Pauli's and the 2. Bundesliga's history.
During his year and a half at St. Pauli, Hürzeler helped the club win the 2. Bundesliga title once.
In the summer of 2024, Hürzeler was appointed as Brighton & Hove Albion head coach, replacing Roberto De Zerbi, the current head coach of Tottenham Hotspur.
Since taking over, Hürzeler has managed the Premier League club in 85 matches across all competitions, achieving 37 wins, 25 draws, and 23 losses, with a win percentage of 43.5%.
