Aston Villa striker Malen's buyout clause has been triggered, meaning he will remain at Roma next season.

According to multiple media reports on Thursday, the terms of Dutch striker Donyell Malen's permanent transfer from Aston Villa to Roma have automatically expired. His buyout fee is expected to be €25 million, with an additional 10% percentage fee for a second transfer.

Gazzetta dello Sport further reports that Malen will sign a four-year contract with Roma. He will also enjoy an annual salary of 4 million euros until June 30, 2030.

Malen joined Roma on loan for €2 million in January, with a mandatory buy-out clause linked to European qualification. Since Lazio's defeat in the Italian Cup final secured Roma's European qualification, this clause was officially activated.

In addition, Malen's attendance rate of over 50% has reached the threshold for a buyout under his contract. Since joining Roma in the winter transfer window, he has made 18 appearances for the team in all competitions, contributing 14 goals and 3 assists to help the team finish fifth in Serie A.

The deal is still pending official confirmation. However, after helping Roma defeat Parma 3-2 last week, Malen publicly expressed his sense of belonging to the club: "I am very happy to be in Serie A. Roma is a great club, I love it here, and I can play my own style of football."

The 27-year-old Malen trained at Ajax and Arsenal before making his first-team debut for PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie on February 4, 2018. He then played for Borussia Dortmund for four seasons, making 132 appearances, scoring 39 goals and providing 20 assists.

In January 2025, Malen joined Aston Villa for £21 million. His performance at Villa was disappointing, contributing only 10 goals and 2 assists in 46 appearances over a year.

Before Roma officially signed Malen, he was linked with several clubs, including Manchester United. With Roma securing a European spot for next season, the possibility of Malen leaving this summer is extremely slim.
