The Liverpool Echo reported on Wednesday, citing Merseyside Police, that police have arrested a 71-year-old Everton male fan who allegedly racistly abused Manchester City players Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guéhi during a Premier League match at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
According to the report, Everton officials immediately dispatched security after receiving a report and filed a police report with Merseyside Police. Security personnel and witnesses complained of a group of fans in the stands repeatedly shouting "aggressive and racist remarks" at opposing players.
After verifying his identity, police arrested the 71-year-old male Everton fan who allegedly caused the incident. Police will investigate the case for disorderly conduct and making discriminatory or offensive remarks. Everton officials will continue to cooperate fully with the police investigation.
The fan has been granted bail with conditions, including a restriction that he cannot enter any designated area within one mile of the stadium from four hours before the start of the match until four hours after the end of the match.
Following the release of this news, Manchester City welcomed the swift action of Merseyside Police through their official website and reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards any form of racism, stating that it has no place in today's civilized world.
In the same match, England international centre-back Marc Guéhi was subjected to racist abuse by irrational fan after his misjudgment led to a goal conceded.
It is worth mentioning that this fan is the second this season to be arrested for allegedly racistly abusing Antoine Semenyo.
Several months ago, a Liverpool fan was also arrested at Anfield for allegedly racistly abusing Semenyo, who was then playing for Bournemouth. The case was originally scheduled to go to trial at the end of April, but was postponed after the suspect was deemed unable to appear in court following a mental evaluation.
