In Monday's Premier League match, Manchester City drew 3-3 with Everton away from home. However, both Manchester City and Everton subsequently issued official statements strongly condemning the racist acts against Manchester City players Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guéhi.
Everton confirmed in a statement that a 71-year-old man was arrested by Merseyside Police during the match at Sidrockinson Stadium for allegedly making racist remarks against visiting player Semenho.
Thanks to prompt reports from fans and staff at the stadium, police arrested the man on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offenses. He has since been released on bail but is subject to a strict restraining order, prohibiting him from entering any stadium within a one-mile radius before, during, and after the game.
Meanwhile, Manchester City defender Güeui faced severe online harassment after making a mistake that led to a goal conceded during the match. Manchester City expressed deep disappointment and condemned the malicious racist posts on social media. The club emphasized that it will provide full support to Semenho and Güeui.
Both clubs reiterated their zero-tolerance stance towards discrimination. Everton emphasized that there is no place for discrimination in any form on the pitch or in society. Manchester City stated unequivocally that they will not tolerate any discriminatory behavior that undermines the integrity of football.
Currently, the police and football authorities are still conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. This incident once again serves as a wake-up call for the Premier League regarding on-field civility and online environment management.
