Ireland manager Hallgrímsson responds to elimination: The team's resilience gives me confidence for the future.

Ireland, holding a two-goal lead, were held to a draw by the Czech Republic and ultimately lost in a penalty shootout, missing out on a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

After the match, Ireland manager Haimir Hallgrímsson couldn't hide his disappointment in an interview, but he devoted more of his words to expressing his expectations for the team's future and affirming the players' abilities.

Faced with the painful loss of a promising situation, Hallgrímsson frankly expressed his bitterness: "If I had to describe how I feel right now in one word, it would be pain."

“I know all the players are going through this ordeal right now. But, besides the pain, I’m even more proud of their performance. They gave it their all on the field. I’m also incredibly grateful to the fans who remained steadfast in their support throughout the game and even after the loss.”

Hallgrímsson also emphasized the team's recent significant progress. He pointed out that Ireland has proven its potential: "The confidence we've gained is that we can play against teams ranked much higher than us by FIFA."

“We can play exceptionally well, as we did against Portugal, Hungary, and today the Czech Republic. Before coming to Prague, we had a three-game winning streak, something this national team hasn’t achieved in a long time.”

When discussing the team's future, Hallgrímsson appeared exceptionally resolute. He stated that this group of young players experienced the most significant matches of their careers, and this experience under pressure is invaluable.

“All the team’s statistics and metrics are improving in a real way. The players have shown tremendous resilience and character in the face of big games and crucial moments. It may sound strange to say this after a loss, but that’s precisely why I remain confident in the future of this team,” Hallgrímsson concluded.
