Mainz 05 confirmed on Wednesday that Dani da Costa's contract has been automatically extended for another year. He will continue to play for Mainz until June 30, 2027.
Da Costa's contract with Mainz was originally set to expire this summer, but it included a one-year extension clause. With Mainz's victory over St. Pauli on May 2nd and their early survival in the Premier League, this clause has now officially come into effect.
However, some media outlets attributed da Costa's automatic contract extension to him meeting the required number of appearances. So far this season, he has made 44 appearances for Mainz, contributing 2 goals and 4 assists.
Regarding the contract extension, Mainz Sporting Director Nico Bungert explained: "Danny is synonymous with reliability. His ability to maintain a consistent performance throughout the season and play almost every game is a remarkable achievement in itself. We are delighted that Mainz 05 can continue to rely on Danny's composure, consistent performance, and rich experience."
Da Costa then added: "I'm looking forward to welcoming the new season with my teammates. This season is nearing its end, and we've experienced various emotional ups and downs and endured a lot of pain, but we've also seen the potential of Mainz 05. I will definitely continue to give my all to help the team achieve the best results."
The 32-year-old Da Costa came through the Bayer Leverkusen youth academy and previously played for German powerhouses such as Ingolstadt and Eintracht Frankfurt. He joined Mainz on loan from Frankfurt in January 2021 and completed the permanent transfer in July 2022.
During his time at Mainz, Da Costa played in several positions, including center-back, right midfielder, and right-back. To date, he has made 131 appearances for Mainz, scoring 2 goals and providing 9 assists.
