Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the second consecutive year with an overwhelming advantage, thanks to his dominant performance this season.
Of the 100 first-place votes, 27-year-old Shai Gilgeous-Alexander received 83. Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets and Marcus Wernbane of the San Antonio Spurs finished second and third, respectively. Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers and Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons made the top five; both had previously failed to meet the required number of appearances but received special exemptions through appeals.
This season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points per game, ranking second in the league, with a career-high field goal percentage of 55.3%, and contributed 6.6 assists. He led the Thunder to a 64-18 record, securing the best record in the league for the second consecutive year.
In addition, Alexander also won the Clutch Player of the Year award, leading the league in total points in clutch moments (175), number of clutch comeback goals (16), and plus-minus (+93).
This marks Alexander's fourth consecutive year finishing in the top five for MVP voting. He also becomes the first player since Michael Jordan to average at least 30 points per game for four consecutive seasons.
After receiving the award, Alexander thanked his teammates, saying that the positive atmosphere within the team brought back the pure joy of basketball to the high-intensity commercial league. The Thunder didn't have much time to celebrate, as they were set to face the Spurs, led by Wernban Yama, in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Monday night.
