David Moyer admitted that while the players performed well for most of the time, the team consistently failed to capitalize on key opportunities.

In their final home game of the 2025/26 season, Everton suffered a 1-3 defeat to Sunderland. After the match, manager David Moyer admitted that the team had once again missed a crucial opportunity. This loss dropped Everton to 12th place in the standings, as they are still vying for European qualification next season. A victory would have given them a chance to catch up with eighth-placed Brentford with 52 points.
After the match, David Moyes said: "At certain stages of today's game, we didn't play like a team capable of competing for European qualification, that's for sure. Although the players performed very well at many times, today was clearly not our game."
Everton midfielder Merlin Roll scored his first club goal of the match, giving his team an early lead in the first half. However, the second half saw a dramatic turn of events, with Sunderland launching a strong counter-attack. Bryan Broby, Enzo Lefèvre, and Wilson Isidore all scored in quick succession, ultimately securing a comeback victory for Sunderland.
David Moyes continued: "We messed things up today. If we had won, the situation would have been completely different. I think Everton haven't been this close to the top of the league in a long time, so what disappoints me most is that the team failed to take advantage of this opportunity."
“This was originally an opportunity to help the team build strong momentum, but today’s performance may show that we are not really ready to move to a higher level. Some things in the game did not go according to our plan. We conceded a goal that was too easy. However, the team regained its rhythm and looked to have a better chance to score again. But then we conceded a second goal, and when we tried to catch up, the opponent scored a third goal.”
This match also marked captain Seamus Coleman's farewell game at home. The Everton legend announced this week that he would end his 17-year club career at the end of the season. In this match, he made his final appearance as a substitute in the final stages.
Speaking about Seamus Coleman, David Moyes said: "He deserves this applause and treatment because he fully deserves it for everything he has done for this club. But Seamus Coleman himself would say that the team is always the most important. He is as disappointed as we are with today's defeat at home in front of the Everton fans."
