According to a report by ESPN senior reporter Marc J. Spears on Thursday, the Utah Jazz are hoping to acquire Brigham Young University star AJ Debanza in the 2026 NBA Draft. Holding the second overall pick, they have contacted the Washington Wizards to discuss the possibility of trading up to acquire the first overall pick.
The 19-year-old Dibanza is a 2.06-meter tall, 100-kilogram forward and is considered one of the top prospects for the number one draft pick. Last season at Brigham Young University, he averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game, shooting 51% from the field, 33.1% from three-point range, and 77.4% from the free-throw line, and was named the Major League Soccer Rookie of the Year.
According to Spears, Dibbanza has already met with several teams at the Chicago Combine. Besides the Wizards and Jazz, he also met with the Chicago Bulls, Sacramento Kings, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, and Los Angeles Clippers.
It's worth noting that Dibanza himself is reportedly open to joining the Jazz. Having spent both of his college years in Utah, he is very familiar with the local environment.
Nevertheless, the Jazz are not putting all their eggs in one basket with DiBansca. They are also simultaneously evaluating several potential rookies, including Kansas guard Darlin Peterson, Duke forward Cameron Boozer, and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson.
