According to a recent report by ESPN's Shams Charania, the Milwaukee Bucks have begun listening to trade offers for Giannis Antetokounmpo. With the NBA draft approaching, the possibility of the two teams parting ways is increasing.
It is widely expected within the league that Giannis Antetokounmpo will be extremely active in the trade market this summer. However, the Bucks are clearly not going to let go of their star player easily: they are still sticking to the high price they set before the trade deadline, demanding a young top rookie and/or a large number of first-round picks.
In fact, the rift between the two sides has long been irreparable. Giannis Antetokounmpo requested a trade from the Bucks in February of this year, and his stance has remained unchanged. Bucks owner Jimmy Haslem recently publicly acknowledged that the team plans to decide Antetokounmpo's future before the 2026 NBA Draft.
“We’ve been having these conversations since the end of the season. As I said before, the draft is on June 23rd and 24th. In the next six or seven weeks, we’ll decide whether to keep Giannis with a max contract extension or let him play for another team. Jon Horst, Tyler Jenkins, Wes Edens, and I will make the decision together,” he stated clearly at his first press conference after Tyler Jenkins took over as Bucks head coach.
Over the past year, the conflict between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks has escalated. He expressed his desire to join the New York Knicks last offseason, but the Bucks, confident in their championship aspirations, did not actively pursue the trade. They ultimately finished the season with a 32-50 record, missing the playoffs and even the play-in tournament.
Against this backdrop, the Bucks decided to completely rebuild starting next season. They first parted ways with Doc Rivers, and then hired 41-year-old Jenkins as head coach with a six-year contract worth over ten million dollars a year.
Nevertheless, the Bucks' management has not completely given up on the possibility of retaining Giannis Antetokounmpo. If Antetokounmpo ultimately chooses to stay, General Manager Jon Horst may continue to strengthen the roster around this year's 10th overall pick, two future first-round picks, and some tradable contracts.
Currently, the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, and Toronto Raptors are all considered potential destinations for Giannis Antetokounmpo. League executives generally believe that Giannis' personal wishes will be the key factor in determining his future destination.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, the 31-year-old first-round pick in the 2013 NBA draft, has spent 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks. He led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship and has won numerous accolades, including one Finals MVP, two regular season MVPs, seven All-NBA First Team selections, four All-Defensive First Team selections, one Defensive Player of the Year award, and ten All-Star appearances.
Due to injuries and management issues, Giannis Antetokounmpo only played 36 regular season games this season. Nevertheless, he still contributed an average of 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game in his limited playing time.
